Once upon a time, gay men were considered freaks and lesbians were assumed to be mimicking men. Butches and Grrls were called Bull Dykes, and Faggot was meant to make men fear the threat of violence by referring to the abhorrent terrorism that churches and the public practiced by torturing and burning gays and lesbians.
